The disc spins, the player reads it, the display comes to life and the music begins. It is a small ritual that has largely disappeared from everyday digital listening.

We like that physicality.

It is not necessarily about convenience or technical superiority. A file on an SSD is easier to store. Streaming is easier still. But there is something satisfying about having the music as a physical object and using a dedicated piece of hardware to play it.

That is part of the reason NAC1 exists.

The compact disc is one of those technologies that seems completely understood. Introduced decades ago, its basic audio specification is familiar: 16-bit, 44.1 kHz PCM, stored on a standard optical disc and reproduced by an enormous ecosystem of CD players.

It is difficult to imagine adding something fundamentally new to that system without replacing the disc, replacing the player, or abandoning compatibility with the hardware that made the format so successful.

NAC1 started with a different idea.

What if we kept the CD?

Instead of replacing the physical medium, we developed a new audio format that uses the compact disc as its carrier while extending what can be stored on it.

The result is NAC1.

A Different Kind of CD

At the physical level, a NAC1 disc can remain a conventional compact disc.

It can be read by a normal CD deck, using the same optical technology that has been used for decades.

The difference comes after the data has been read.

A conventional CD player expects Red Book PCM.

A NAC1 decoder understands something else.

We developed our own decoder specifically for the format, allowing the data read from the disc to be reconstructed into audio that goes beyond the original CD specification.

This creates an unusual separation between the physical medium and the audio format.

The disc is familiar.

The player is familiar.

The audio format is new.

And the decoder is ours.

Beyond Red Book

The original CD audio standard provides 16-bit / 44.1 kHz PCM.

NAC1 can retain that conventional mode, but it can also carry higher-resolution audio.

The format supports:

16-bit / 44.1 kHz Red Book PCM

24-bit / 44.1 kHz audio

24-bit / 48 kHz audio

The latter two are particularly interesting because they provide capabilities that conventional CD-DA does not.

A standard Red Book CD player does not suddenly become a 24-bit / 48 kHz player.

Instead, the CD transport continues doing what it has always done: reading data from the optical disc.

The NAC1 decoder takes over the interpretation of that data.

This is an important distinction.

NAC1 does not modify the CD laser or invent a new optical recording technology.

It uses the existing medium as a carrier for a new layer of information.

The Interesting Part Is Not Just Resolution

Higher sample rates and greater bit depth are easy things to put on a specification sheet.

They are not, by themselves, what makes NAC1 interesting.

The real challenge is fitting substantially more audio information into a medium with very strict limitations.

A compact disc has a finite amount of storage and a finite data channel.

NAC1 therefore cannot simply treat the disc as a convenient container for an enormous uncompressed 24-bit audio file.

The audio has to be represented efficiently.

This is where compression becomes part of the format.

Lossless When Possible

One of the goals of NAC1 was to retain as much of the original audio information as possible.

Depending on the material and the available bitrate, NAC1 can use lossless compression.

That means the original audio can be reconstructed exactly.

But not every recording behaves in the same way.

Some material simply does not compress enough to fit within the constraints of the physical medium while remaining completely lossless.

Instead of making the entire format either lossless or lossy, NAC1 can adapt its approach.

Where the material allows it, the format can retain lossless information.

Where that is not practical, it can use a near-lossless mode designed to retain very high audio quality while satisfying the available data budget.

This makes NAC1 less like a conventional single-codec format and more like an adaptive system.

The objective is not to force every recording through the same compression method.

The objective is to make the best possible use of the limited space available on the disc.

One Medium, Several Possibilities

This also gives NAC1 an interesting relationship with conventional CD audio.

The project does not require us to abandon Red Book PCM.

A disc can still contain conventional 16-bit / 44.1 kHz PCM.

But the same physical medium can also be used for NAC1 material carrying 24-bit / 44.1 kHz or 24-bit / 48 kHz audio.

That creates something unusual:

A technology originally designed around one fixed audio representation can become the physical foundation for several different audio modes.

The compact disc becomes a carrier rather than a limitation.

The Decoder

Of course, none of this would be useful without a way to play the result.

That is why the NAC1 decoder is an important part of the project.

Rather than depending on a modified commercial CD player, we developed a decoder specifically for NAC1.

The CD deck performs the physical reading.

The NAC1 decoder performs the interpretation.

This approach also allows the decoder to expose information that a conventional CD player normally has no reason to show.

It can identify the audio mode, compression method and other characteristics of the NAC1 stream.

The goal is not simply to make the audio play.

It is to make the format understandable.

The decoder becomes an appliance for NAC1 rather than merely another command-line utility.

A New Format Built Around an Old Medium

There is something deliberately backwards about NAC1.

Modern audio formats normally assume modern storage.

Large hard drives, flash memory, optical discs with enormous capacity, network streaming and high-speed connections make storage constraints increasingly invisible.

NAC1 goes in the opposite direction.

It starts with a medium that has very limited capacity by modern standards and asks:

What can we still do with it?

That constraint is actually useful.

It forces the format to be efficient.

It forces us to think about compression differently.

And it makes the result physically tangible.

A NAC1 recording isn’t just another file sitting on an SSD.

It can exist as an actual compact disc that can be placed into an ordinary CD transport.

That is an important part of the appeal.

An Optical Disc With a Modern Identity

The compact disc was designed around assumptions that made sense when it was introduced.

16-bit / 44.1 kHz PCM was the target.

The disc was primarily a digital replacement for analog audio media.

The player was expected to understand the format directly.

NAC1 changes the relationship between those elements.

The disc becomes the carrier.

The decoder becomes the intelligence.

The physical medium can remain almost completely familiar while the information represented on it becomes something very different.

This is also why NAC1 is not simply a new compression codec.

A codec alone does not define the whole experience.

NAC1 encompasses the encoded audio, the way that audio is placed within the available data budget, the different operating modes and the decoder that brings everything back together.

The physical CD is only the beginning.

Why Build It?

There are certainly easier ways to store 24-bit / 48 kHz audio.

A modern SSD can hold enormous amounts of it.

A network connection can stream it.

A USB drive can carry it without the constraints imposed by optical media.

If convenience were the objective, there would be little reason to build NAC1.

But convenience isn’t the objective.

We enjoy the physicality of music.

We like having an album as an object rather than only as a collection of files. We like the ritual of selecting a disc, putting it into a deck and pressing play. We like the fact that the playback system becomes part of the experience rather than disappearing completely behind a screen.

NAC1 is an attempt to preserve that experience while giving the compact disc capabilities that were never part of its original specification.

That is also why the limitations of the medium are interesting rather than simply frustrating.

A compact disc has a finite capacity and a finite data channel.

Instead of discarding those limitations, NAC1 treats them as the engineering challenge.

The question becomes:

Can we make an old physical format do something new?

That is one of the ideas behind Off-Label Hardware.

We are surrounded by hardware and formats that are considered obsolete because they can no longer compete with modern technology on its terms.

But changing the terms can change the answer.

The compact disc doesn’t need to become a modern solid-state drive.

It only needs to become something different from what it was originally designed to be.

The Achievement

NAC1 demonstrates that a familiar optical medium can be given a new role.

A conventional CD deck can provide the physical reading mechanism.

A standard compact disc can provide the carrier.

The NAC1 decoder can provide the new interpretation layer.

And the result can include audio modes extending beyond conventional Red Book PCM, including 24-bit / 44.1 kHz and 24-bit / 48 kHz, with lossless or near-lossless representation depending on the material and encoding mode.

That is the part of NAC1 that matters most.

We didn’t build a new optical disc.

We didn’t need to build a new CD transport.

We took an existing medium and asked a different question of it.

How much more can a compact disc become?

NAC1 is our answer.

The disc is old.

The idea is new.

An experimental audio format that gives the compact disc a new role — carrying 24-bit / 44.1 kHz and 24-bit / 48 kHz audio alongside standard Red Book PCM, with lossless or near-lossless encoding.
